LONDON, England: IAG, parent company of British Airways, has expressed confidence that air traffic will increase beginning in July.

"We consider, in the second half, that we are going to be flying and we are prepared for that," IAG Chief Executive Luis Gallego told reporters.

The company reported a loss of $1.4 billion in the first quarter of 2021.

IAG also owns Iberia and Vueling in Spain, along with Aer Lingus in Ireland. The company did not set specific targets for passenger traffic in July, though officials said the recovery will be underway by then.

Gallego added that government initiatives could help restore the industry, such as opening air corridors between countries whose populations have been vaccinated against the Covid virus.

Along those lines, on May 7 Britain released a list of countries where its citizens can travel without needing to quarantine upon return.

While the May list of such countries was small, Gallego said the list will continue expanding, beginning in June.

Meanwhile, Air France-KLM has announced that it expects passenger traffic to be at 50 percent of normal during the second quarter, reaching 55 to 65 percent in the July to September period.

In 2021, Lufthansa officials expect to fly some 40 percent of pre-pandemic passengers.
